Integratie tussen primaire en intramurale gezondheidszorg / Integration of primary and intramural health care

On the occasion of the re-opening of the completely renovated Regional Hospital Nickerie a presentation was made titled "Integration of primary and Intramural Helath care ". This article is an adaption of that presentation. The author expresses the opinion that there exists no duality between these types of health care. Primary Health Care developed from a philosophical principle of social justice. In contrast in tramural care from a strict medical focus central to which were "pure" scientific methods and reasoning. The operational execution of primary healthcare programs through, demands a network of hospitals and vice versa hospitals need to offer a broader scope of service rather than a narrow medical scientific approach.(AU)

Some problem areas in the health sector in Surinam

The purpose of this paper is to determine some demographical data and mortality statistics, especially where they provide clues to the study of the health status of the population. Some data on the nutritional status of selected population samples, collected during a short survey in 1974, are also presented. The available health resources are reviewed, because maternal and child health appeared to be a major health problem. Finally, it is postulated that the existing policy in the health care system should be reassessed and greater priority should be given to the public health sector
